Sutton Place dates from 1535 and was built for Sir Ralph Sadleir. From humblish beginnings, he was a protégé of Thomas Cromwell and became Henry the Eighth’s Secretary of State.
The ensuing five hundred or so years have seen the house used as a school, for fire watching during the Blitz and as HQ of Clive Jenkins’ ASTMS union in the 1960’s. Squatters enjoyed themselves in the 1980s, and their graffiti forms part of the current display.
Acquired by the National Trust in the 1930’s, the house is now open for the public to enjoy its range of features: Tudor windows, carved fireplaces, a medieval cellar. Wood lovers will appreciate the splendid linenfold oak panelling in several of the chambers, along with a delightful cradle that would provide any baby with gentle slumber.
